Star Wars Jedi 3 Reportedly Far Along, With an Announcement Expected Soon

Jason Schreier says Star Wars Jedi 3 is far in development and could be announced soon, while Battlefront 3 has yet to enter development.

Respawn Entertainment’s next Star Wars Jedi game appears to be much further along than Star Wars Battlefront 3. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier says Jedi 3 is “far in development” and should be “announced soon.” That’s a meaningful update on the series’ third game, but it answers only a narrow question: the project is advancing. It doesn’t establish a release date, confirm what the announcement will include, or say how much work remains before the game is ready.

Schreier also said Battlefront 3 hasn’t started development, despite reports that EA had chosen to prioritize it at Respawn and DICE amid BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of Mass Effect. Those are separate signals: reports of a priority can describe an intention, while Schreier’s comment describes the project’s current reported status. The gap matters. A project can be discussed or favored internally without a production team having begun work.

What the status reports do—and don’t—tell us

The reported status of the two Star Wars projects suggests the next Jedi installment could arrive first, but the available information doesn’t say when. “Far in development” gives a rough sense of progress, not a schedule. Game development can involve substantial work after an announcement, and a public reveal may arrive before a publisher is ready to commit to a launch window.

Here’s the thing: an unstarted Battlefront 3 can’t be treated as a near-term counterweight to Jedi 3 simply because it was reportedly prioritized. The two descriptions point to different stages of readiness. That’s useful context for readers trying to understand EA’s current Star Wars plans, though both accounts remain reported information rather than a formal project update from the company.

What’s known about the next Jedi game

The sequel to 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been described as the planned conclusion to the story. EA’s Laura Miele said Respawn was “working hard to bring the final chapter of this thrilling story to players.” That statement supports the idea that the series is intended to end with a third installment, while leaving the shape of that ending undisclosed. It also gives the project a different kind of expectation: players may be looking for a conclusion to Cal Kestis’ story, not simply another chapter with no stated endpoint.

Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb has said production began immediately after the second game, adding: “Everyone involved knew they were going to make a third game. They wanted to do a trilogy.” If that account is accurate, the trilogy plan could have helped Respawn carry story and design decisions across the games. But an early production start doesn’t reveal the scale of the project, its current content, or whether its plans have changed since then.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported last June that the game would feature an older Cal Kestis, though he wouldn’t need a walking stick. That detail and the production timeline remain reported claims; EA hasn’t confirmed them. The character’s age could signal a story set later in his life, but the report alone doesn’t establish when the game takes place or how much time has passed since Survivor.

Why the trilogy framing matters

A planned final chapter gives the next game a clear narrative job. It has to carry forward the people and conflicts established in the earlier entries while giving the story a satisfying endpoint. That can shape expectations well before players know anything about combat, exploration, or new characters. And this is the part most people overlook: a trilogy’s finale is judged partly by how it resolves what came before, so a short announcement may invite more questions than it answers.

This is more significant than it looks. If you’re working in this space, the contrast between an advanced sequel and an unstarted project is a reminder that portfolio priorities don’t translate neatly into release order. The stage of development matters, but even that doesn’t produce a dependable launch forecast on its own.

An announcement isn’t a launch window

An announcement may be near, but it won’t necessarily mean a 2027 release—or a launch sooner than that. A reveal could clarify the game’s direction and timing, if Respawn is indeed far along. It might also offer only a title or a brief teaser, leaving the practical questions unanswered. For now, the strongest indication is simply that Jedi 3 is advancing while Battlefront 3 remains unstarted. That’s the clearest takeaway, and the limit of what the reported comments support.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is available on Xbox One, PS5, PC, PS4, and Xbox Series X/S; read our review here. For players deciding what to make of the next installment, that earlier game is the confirmed point of reference. The details about its sequel remain a mix of EA’s stated trilogy plan and claims from reporters and industry insiders.
